Then it wasn't really necessary, was it? Only convenient.
One reason: have you seen the X directory structures under Red Hat? Ugh...
it is a nightmare. And then ln -s is put to liberal use so you are hopelessly
confused.... If Unix is hard, why make Linux harder??
