gpm config for Logitech MouseMan+ PS/2

What is the correct gpm configuration for a Logitech MouseMan+ PS/2
three-button wheel mouse ? I keep getting the following message in my
logs:

Mar 18 23:02:15 phoenix gpm[29222]: Skipping a data packet (?)
Mar 18 23:02:15 phoenix gpm[29222]: Extra byte = 28
Mar 18 23:02:58 phoenix gpm-root[29245]: Warning: closing connection
Mar 18 23:04:30 phoenix gpm[29411]: Skipping a data packet (?)
Mar 18 23:04:30 phoenix gpm[29411]: Extra byte = 01
Mar 18 23:04:30 phoenix gpm[29411]: Extra byte = 00
Mar 18 23:04:30 phoenix gpm[29411]: Extra byte = 08

The mouse works fine in X-Windows, and here is section from
/etc/X11/XF86Config that specifies its configuration:

Section "Pointer"
    Protocol "MouseManPlusPS/2"
    Device "/dev/mouse"
    ZAxisMapping 4 5

Its current gpm configuration is:

Configuring gpm (mouse event server):

Current configuration: -m /dev/psaux -t mman
Device: /dev/psaux
Type: mman

But that isn't working at all in console mode when I login from any of
the virtual terminals. Currently running an updated potato/frozen system
with:

ii libc6 2.1.3-7 GNU C Library: Shared libraries and Timezone data
ii gpm 1.17.8-15 General Purpose Mouse Interface
ii libgpmg1 1.17.8-15 General Purpose Mouse Library [libc6]

and kernel-2.2.14. Has anyone gotten this wheel mouse to work properly
with gpm ? I'd appreciate any information.

Thanks.
