ghttp (it is in GNOME but has NO depends other than libc) is a rather clean
http client library.  It does not support secure queries, but the author would
definately appreciate the help.  Personally, I love how clean and simple this
one is.

there is a HUGE lib from the w3c.  It is the mother of all C http libraries.

a few more assorted items on freshmeat, none of them very interesting or
finished.
