You have to tell wich device you want to remove, ie:

 echo "scsi remove-single-device 0 0 5 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi

                           [ Host Channel Id Lun ]

this is "documented" in /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/scsi.c :-)
