I too am AGP-challenged, and for that very reason I went with the Voodoo3 2000
PCI. I was able to find mine for around $85, and have been thrilled with it. I
was moving from a Matrox Millenium I, and was a little concerned about the 2D
quality. To my surprise the Voodoo3 not only seems to run the 2D much faster, but
also looks much better while allowing for higher resolutions without losing the
quality. I used to run my Desktop at 1024x768, now I'm running at 1280x1024.
As far as 3D goes, the work that has been put into Mesa to support GLIDE(which
is OSS now, btw) and the 3DFx cards is pretty amazing. I'm running on a dual
PPro 200 and get pretty good 3D performance ... much more than I would have
expected. And the installation of the mesa support is a piece of cake. Just do an
apt-cache search mesa, and install the programs you need.
