Do "apt-get install proftpd" and it will configure a fairly secure
ftp server offering you the choice to have or not have anonymous
access.

add this line to /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://security.debian.org/ stable updates

Now run apt-get update followed by apt-get upgrade.  There's all the
security patches applied.  Do that once a month and you're secure in
terms of the software.
