ftp and security

Coming into Linux is a little overwhelming, especially I think since I chose
Debian. I am coming along ok I think but I have a few more questions. In
the book I bought that is based on Debian 2.1 it says that wu-ftp-academ, or
something very similar, controls all the ftp access but when I installed it,
it said it had been replaced by netstd, which I installed but now I don't
know how to configure my ftp server. I saw the file ftpusers, but this just
limits who can't log on I think. I want to be able to set permessions and
such.

I've been trying to read about linux security but I am just overwhelmed with
information and I'm not really sure where to start. I did d/l the Debian
patches. I am going to setup a webserver. So where should I go from there?

Thanks,

Brett

oh yeah does anyone know a quick way to disable port 111?
