ftp issues #1

under whichever circumstances i use /usr/bin/ftp (from pkg ftp)
i will not get any listing or file completed.
whereas ncftp for exmpl. works ganz fine + smooth.
i ve tried this on a couple of different servers (machines as well as
software (wuftpd,in.ftpd,proftpd)) as well as clients.
this appeared once in emcas using efs and could be solved by setting
ftp to PASSIVE mode, but doesnt any help this time .. ;|
any ideas/hintz apprec.
