To mute it as a default, for most modems:
  - Run minicom;
  - Set speaker volume to 0 by typing
    ATM0
  - Wait for "OK"
  - Save this as the default by typing
    AT&W
  - Wait for "OK"
  - exit minicom

To mute it when using pon, for a given provider:
  - Edit /etc/chatscripts/<provider>, and change
    ATDT<provider's phone number>
    to
    ATM0DT<provider's phone number>
