are you sure /dev/hdc is your cdrom device? the /dev/cdrom is just a symlink so its permissions are irrelevant. also you did logout and login again after adding yourself to the right group yes?

are you a member of group audio? this is needed to access the sound card devices /dev/audio and /dev/dsp

its annoying that xfreecd does not say WHAT device permission was denied to...
