You mean like "ham", "slink", "potato" or "woody"?I believe that "stable" and "unstable" are symbolic links to what ever is stable or unstable at the moment.
If you want the most current stable version - point to stable. If you want the bleeding-edge - point to unstable. If you want to follow the development of potato - point to potato. Works for me.
