Well, yes...  That's what I was expecting, at least, but it's not what I see
happening.

Check.  exim.conf has

route_list = "* genma byname"

and the relevant line from /etc/hosts reads

10.0.0.101      genma           genma.dojo

Files is before DNS.

Any other ideas?
