The version is found in the top-level Makefile, in these lines:
  VERSION = 2
  PATCHLEVEL = 2
  SUBLEVEL = 14
  EXTRAVERSION = 

You can look in /usr/share/kernel-package/rules to find the exact spot.

i've always done 'make-kpkg clean', patch, 'make menuconfig', 'make-kpkg
--rev blah kernel-image', 'make-kpkg --rev blah modules-image', and
never had any troubles that didn't rate a bug report.
