I have a similar setup but between 2 debian machines - not SCO.
This does not appear to be a problem with the TCP part.

If it used to work modem to modem and not with TCP/IP have a
look at the line in /etc/inet.d that calls uucp. I think it must be called
as user "mmdf". Can you log into scorch, as root, then su mmdf,
and typ "rmail" and see if you get an error?

You may also need a line like
commands rmail,uux
in the sys file on speedy but I don't think it is relavent to this
problem.

One final twist. I don't know how your filewall setup works, but we
use uucp on dial-up machines to handle incomming mail. For
outgoing mail they send it directly via smtp. If you cant make
speedy get mail out to scorch via uucp, you may consider
forwarding it to scorch via smtp. (Setup scourch to allow relaying
from speedy. It will not affect your incomming mail or MX's etc).
Have fun
