[Note: I'm not the original poster and the quoted text is not from me,
but I got the exact same problem at the exact same time - that is,
between last friday and this monday]

Hmm. I'm confused now. I looked for FontPath in my XF86Config and found
that every FontPath entry was commented out. Now that I think about it,
I know that this has been the case for some time (several months) but my
fonts only just started looking ugly. The list of fonts looked something
like the list above, just with a # in front of each.

Then I took a look in /etc/X11/xfs/config. This has a *completely*
different set of font paths:
catalogue =
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/

Around this point my brain started spinning trying to figure out the
difference between /usr/lib/X11/fonts, /etc/X11/fonts,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts, and so on.

Anyway, I have gsfonts, gsfonts-x11, xfs-xtt, xfonts-100dpi,
xfonts-75dpi, xfonts-base and xfonts-scalable installed... xfstt
wouldn't work because I had no actual tt fonts.

Where are my fonts coming from? Where are they going? And what changed
in these packages in the last few days?

I'm confused.

Stuart.
