Console locks after upgrade to Potato

Hello,

I have been using Slink on my Toshiba Satellite 4000CDT since March
without a problem. I just upgraded to Potato and the console does not
respond now. I am dual booting the Laptop with OpenBSD, so I am confident
it is not a hardware issue. I also custom compiled a 2.2.13 kernel, which
I do not believe is the issue as when I first did the upgrade and then
installed the kernel, the console still worked (I did include support for
Virtual Consoles in the kernel config). It is when I upgraded kbd to the
current .99-8 and removed kbd-data (and replace it with the console-*
package) that it hosed me. I have tried to downgrade back to kbd and
kbd-data .96, but the console is still locked. For an experiment I
installed gdm (through ssh) to see if that would change anything, but when
I rebooted it was locked also (no keyboard/mouse response).

I have checked through the archive and read the keyboard/console HOWTO to
no avail. The docs in /usr/share/doc/kbd do not mention this problem.
Though there were a few posts about problems with the kbd package and the
console locking up, none were resolved that I could see.

I can see no messages in the logs (kern, syslog, etc), and the keymap
seems to load fine (both in the dmesg and when I manually load the map).
There are gettys running on tty1-6.

Any help appreciated, would hate to have to reload slink.

Thanks in advance

Mike
