You can have superfast graphics (usually slightly faster than dos as you
now has 32-bit computing power to do the work)
You just don't use INT 10h for setting the mode, that's all.
Use svgalib.  You can then set a suitable mode and do what you want - fast.
quake runs well in linux :-)
