Have you tried the info at the XFree86 web site ?  They have a
detailed info per chip family.  Just note your xfree version
number e.g. 3.3.5 for current potato, and check the resources
section near the bottom.

It's also possible that your chipset will be better supported
by a later version of XFree86, if your using stable (slink).

If your still stuck, you can tell us :

Which version of debian you are using.
Which version of xfree86 you have installed.
The output of the X startup routine.

To get the last item, you need to get the diagnostic info
from startx.  First you need to turn off any X login controllers,
e.g. gdm or xdm, with a command like :

/etc/init.d/xdm stop

then capture the output to a file like :

startx 2>/tmp/startx.dump

(both run as root of course)
