I am using an Acer 56K modem, and it is a hardware modem that works very
well under both Linux and Windows. Acer modems are also sold under the
AOpen brand name and my modem model is:

  Acer/AOpen FM56PVS-DL

You can get more info on which modems are known winmodems and which are
known hardware modems from the following site:

You want to get a non-PCI (ie ISA) hardware modem that allows for jumper
configurable COM and IRQ settings, like mine does. Ideally, consider
getting an external modem which are the easiest to setup and configure
but generally cost more than non-externals.
