Re: Slink - Xfree86

Starting with slink (Debian 2.1), if the xdm package is installed, you
will boot up to the xdm login screen. To get a default console login,
the simplest/cleanest way is to just uninstall the xdm package:

dpkg --purge xdm

The xdm script that automatically starts/stops xdm is located at
/etc/init.d/xdm, and each run level that starts or stops it uses a
link to /etc/init.d/xdm in the respective /etc/rc*.d directory.

In previous releases (hamm, bo, etc), the default xdm login could be
enabled/disabled by editing /etc/X11/config.

In case you're not aware, you can always get to a console from the xdm
login screen (or from anywhere in X ), by using Ctrl + Alt + F1 for
tty1, Ctrl + Alt + F2 for tty2 etc. Then, from the console, use Alt + F7
to get back to X.
