add user as usual,compile code below with your "short" passwd
gcc a.c -lcrypt
and the manually edit /etc/passwd with output
#include <crypt.h>
#include <stdio.h>
int
main( void ) {
printf("%s\n",crypt("superpasswd","iQ"));
return 0;
}
OK
