xsession not executing

Hi all,

I recently installed gdm to see what it was like and then went back to xdm. When I installed 
xdm, it removed gdm, but now when I login at the xdm console it doesn't execute my .xsession
file but instead just opens an xterm without a window manager.

When I then type ./.xsession in the xterm, my normal session starts. Can someone tell me what
I have done wrong please.
