Actually, if you have module support, you only have to compile
the 2 (tulip and pci-netif) modules.  Donald (Becker) says this
can be preferable, since you can turn on more compiler optimisation
for this driver, independent of the rest of the kernel.  This can
potentially buy you more throughput.  Details on how to do this are
on the site also, IIRC.
