Broken cpan?

I'm getting this now since I'm running debian. Anyone know how to
fix it without re-compiling perl?

cpan> install Date::Calc
CPAN: LWP::UserAgent loaded ok
Fetching with LWP:
  ftp://mirror.xmission.com/CPAN/authors/01mailrc.txt.gz
Going to read /root/.cpan/sources/authors/01mailrc.txt.gz
perl: error in loading shared libraries
/usr/lib/perl5/i386-linux/5.004/auto/Compress/Zlib/Zlib.so: undefined symbol: zlibVersion
