I thought the docs were sparse, too, but so is the program.  Just turn
kerneld off (notice that if you run it from root's command line it
says you probably shouldn't be running it) and do a 

echo "/sbin/modprobe" > /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe

Configuration belongs to modprobe.
