IIRC, LILO should be able to boot from any partition, although it gets
a bit more complicated if the interesting bits aren't near enough to the
front of the disk...
I couldn't tell from the bits of previous posts I could see exactly how
whoever-it-was had been trying to boot, but pay particular attention to
the following:
1) Use LILO in the MBR rather than at the start of the Linux partition;
if you have a DOS/Windows MBR, then it won't try to boot from an extended
partition, and so LILO will never be loaded if it's only installed on, say,
/dev/hda6;
2) Use the "linear" option to LILO if necessary;
3) The "-v" option to LILO is your friend. Actually it can be up to about
3 of your friends at once ("lilo -v -v -v").
