maybe that helps:

simple install gdm, choose gnome session and be astoinished :-)

You only should some stuff from /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 to
/etc/gdm/Init/Default in order get a neat blue background during login and a
xconsole. It works phantastic for me :-)
