Oh, geeez!!! That solved the problem!! I wasn't aware of the "audio" group
at all, and hence I wasn't a member of it. I added myself to it and now
voila!! I can play all my mp3s.

What Debian documentation talks about this audio group ? I didn't see
anything too obvious in either /usr/doc/ or /usr/share/doc. The reason I am
asking is so that I don't forget about any other groups like this which I
might need to be a member of later on.

Thanks Ashley for pointing this out. Also, thanks to all the people who
replied to this thread with their suggestions. Yet another compelling
reason for this type of excellent community-based support.
