It might be easiest to start with 'magicfilter' packet to install it? If
it starts working quite satisfactorily, then try writing your own
printcaps etc...
LyX has got good and easy instructions to make printers working as well.
Try reading LyX help file for 'Customization'. (I made my printer working
once that way.)
