Actually that means it is not online, note the "Local Loopback" in the
first line.

this is the interface you are looking for:

ppp0      Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
          inet addr:155.212.217.54  P-t-P:155.212.110.200 Mask:255.255.255.255
          UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST  MTU:1524  Metric:1
          RX packets:11 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:11 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:10

(if your using a modem and dial-up connection) to get this
unambiguously do:

/sbin/ifconfig ppp0

Do you hear your modem dialing?
as root do: `plog`, what does it say?
