I have a system here that gets an ip address through dchp as well. I've
noticed that it has problems unless there's a line in /etc/hosts that
aliases the hostname to some valid ip address. For example, my box has
this in /etc/hosts:

  127.0.0.1 localhost
  0.0.0.0 anomie

Using 0.0.0.0 means things _should_ always work, even when the box is
disconnected from the 'net.

Just now i tried commenting that second line out and restarting proftpd.
It died with an error "Fatal: unable to determine IP address of `anomie'."
If you run ftp from inetd i would think that could cause the specified
trouble...

Of course, i could be wrong here, but it's worth a try.
