This is probably because gpm 1.16 or early 1.17 was used to link mc.
These snapshots of gpm assumed the client program was always linked
with curses, which turns out to be false in case of mc (mc uses slang
by default).
gpm 1.18 which has just been released (ftp://ftp.prosa.it/pub/gpm)
solves this, but of course you'd have to rebuild both it and mc from
source (until potato gets around to integrating 1.18).
