This is probably the major part of the problem, since everything depends,
directly or indirectly, on the libc libraries.
The file /usr/sbin/update-rc.d is in the dpkg package, i'm not sure why
you don't have it...
Edit /var/lib/dpkg/info/libc6.postinst to comment out the line that calls
update-rc.d, do it manually (e.g. symlink /etc/rcS.d/S35devpts.sh to
../init.d/devpts.sh), and try resuming the install.
