i normally run rxvt instead of xterm, but i just did a test with dselect
and i get the same results. Try running xterm with the -rv option.

  $ xterm -v       
  XFree86 3.9.15b(113)
  $ dpkg -l xterm  # running potato
  ...
  ii  xterm           3.3.4-2        X terminal emulator
