IIRC, the install sets that entry in /etc/hosts for you. Of course, if you
skip that step then you have to do it yourself...

Of course this may be wrong. Feel free to correct me if so (no need to CC,
i'm subscribed to the list)

They're in /var/lib/dpkg/info. You can even edit them if there's a bug,
and dpkg will use the edited version next time.

IIRC if there's an error in the preinst, you'll get an error while
unpacking and the script won't be saved. "dpkg -e <debfile> [<dir>]" will
extract these scripts from the deb into a DEBIAN/ subdir in the specified
directory, or the current one if no dir is specified.
