As an asside, the term "compiler" is typically used for programs that
translate from high-level languages. "assembler" is the standard term for
something that translates mnemonic assembly to object/machine code.
The GNU assembler "as" ("info as") is available as part of the "binutils"
package. Additionally, there is the netwide assembler, "nasm".
