I think you are looking for:

server# ifconfig eth0:1
server# route add -host eth0:1

other# ifconfig eth0:1
other# route add -host eth0:1


other# ifconfig -v
	eth0:1    Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:00:00:00:00:00
        inet addr:  Bcast:  Mask:

other# route -nv
	... UH    0      0        0 eth0:1

- see what you can ping
other# ping
other# ping

( see IP-ALIAS howto for more info )

- make sure IP_ALIAS is turned on for your kernel...
