Thanks one and all. I tried two approaches: - at LILO prompt I typed linux init=/bin/bash. This failed because the / partition mounted read-only - used Toms Rescue Disk. This allowed me to edit /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow. Success! Thanks for the help! Patrick
