I use 'wmnet --device eth0' without problems.  But I think from reading
the man page that you need a 2.1.x or above kernel for the devstats
driver which is used for eth0.  Are you using a 2.0.x kernel?  That may
be the problem.

This is what I get at startup:

# wmnet --device eth0
wmnet: using devstats driver to monitor eth0
