It should work if you enable the following in your kernel:

Enhanced IDE/MFM/RLL disk/cdrom/tape/floppy support (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE)
[Y/n/?] 

Include IDE/ATAPI TAPE support (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDETAPE) [N/y/?]
