AFAIK, you need to launch your window manager at the end of your .xsession (which
must be a proper script with execution rights).

A minimal .xsession could be something like :

---------------------------------------------------
#!/bin/bash

# Set up some environment variables

LANG=french
LC_ALL=fr_FR

export LANG LC_ALL

# Finish .xsession by launching my window manager
/usr/X11R6/bin/wmaker
---------------------------------------------------
