Really it should be: \documentclass[a4paper]{article}.

For many many years ago there was a LaTeX version (2.09) which used
\documentstyle, but that command should really not be used any
more. You might want to read /usr/doc/texmf/latex/base/usrguide.dvi.gz 
for an overview over the main differences between the versions (you
can do that with the `see'-command, without unpacking the file).
