restoring Linux from a tape backup

What is the best way to restore a Linux from a tape backup (ie, if the
hard drive crashed and had to be replaced)? This task must be *simple* --
reinstalling Linux is not an option. I'd like it automated as much as
possible.

The tape backup is a TR-3 drive, which is supported by the kernel. I
haven't decided on a backup software.

Thanks
-Paul
