That's an easy one to fix...

Remove the xdm package.  You will then start with a console login.
Type startx to start X, and when you 'exit' you'll return to a console
prompt.

(note: CTRL-ALT-F1 will switch you from X to a console login prompt,
and ALT-F7 will get you back to X)
