You must turn _off_ encrypted passwords in win98 unless your SAMBA server
is using a password server (the NT domain controller and its backup).

I was having this problem and it turned out to be samba was not rereading
the config file when I made changes to it try /etc/init.d/samba restart
or force-reload use testparm to check this.

To turn off encrypted passwords

msutils folder called pton (or something like that).
