 With GNU cp, copying whole partitions is ok via "cp -a", so tar
is not needed (if one can mount both partitions simultaneously).

 There is also a mini HOWTO to this subject called

/usr/doc/HOWTO/mini/Hard-Disk-Upgrade.*
