(X)Emacs in the console

Hi.

I've been playing around with configuring Emacs20, and XEmacs20. I've got it all working out I want under X, but under the console, XEmacs thinks that my backspace key is delete.

I would've thought this had something to do with the keyboard settings for the console, but Emacs works correctly, with backspace calling backward-delete-char and delete calling delete-char.

I tried rebinding backspace in XEmacs while in the console, but when I hit the backspace key to tell it what key to rebind, it shows 'delete' as the key it read, so I'm stuck...

Can someone tell me what I need to do to fix this, or point me to something which will help?
