Actually, on second look, it looked more like a dump of the AX, BX, CX, and
DX registers. At any rate, I apparently left out the "make modules_install" step
during recompilation, so I went back and did that and "make zdisk" again and now the
hex numbers are gone.

My broken VMWARE was fixed with a reinstall/upgrade (recompile against the new
kernel?) of the vmware app.

Now, if I can just get my sound working, which was the whole point anyway.... I'm
sure you'll hear from me soon after I've burned out on RT<expletive deleted>M.    ;-)
