Alisdair,

These messages come from the ipac package, because you have installed
it but not configured anything in /etc/ipac.conf. It's a bug that
you get mailed about it every six minutes. I suggest that you either

(a) remove it,
(b) configure it, or
(c) upgrade to the version in potato, which you can also download from
    ftp://ftp.rising.com.au/pub/hamish/ipac/ ; you don't need any other
    things from potato to do this, it will work on a slink system.

ipac from slink won't work on linux 2.2 anyway, since the old IP accounting
is now part of ipchains. You need the very latest version for linux 2.2
support.
