Just some advice for next time: whenever you're upgrading X or your
window manager, make sure you run apt-get or dselect from a console.
Otherwise, if the installation script stops X or the window manager to
install the upgrade, then the xterm dpkg was running in gets killed as
well, which kills dpkg and stops the installation in the middle. All in
all, not a good thing!

Usually you can get away with using the old version while installing the
new version. But don't count on it, that doesn't always work depending on
what exactly is being upgraded.
